# Diigo alternatives

Diigo was the bookmark-and-highlight tool for years. If the extension keeps breaking on you, these are the alternatives for bookmarks, highlights, and keeping pages.

*A clean reading copy of a saved article in Savepad*

**TLDR**

- Diigo has been around since 2006 and a lot of researchers and teachers built their whole system on it. It hasn’t announced a shutdown.
- People are leaving because the extension breaks, things feel slow, and they’re scared of losing years of bookmarks.
- For highlights, try Readwise Reader. For bookmarks, try Raindrop or Pinboard. To keep a copy of every page, try Savepad.

## Is Diigo going away?

Not officially. There’s no shutdown notice. But if you read the reviews on its browser extension, you’ll see plenty of people saying it stopped working, and others saying they were charged again after it did. Competitors have started calling it abandonware, which is them being competitors, but the worry is real.

After [Pocket shut down in 2025](https://savepad.app/blog/pocket-alternatives) and took people’s libraries with it, nobody wants to find out the hard way. So step one, whatever you pick: export your Diigo library today. It’s on the tools page, as HTML or CSV.

## Readwise Reader

If you used Diigo for highlighting and annotating articles, [Readwise Reader](https://readwise.io/read) is the best at it right now. Highlights, notes, a great reading view, and it syncs to your notes app. It’s paid and leans on AI features (Ghostreader), which you can ignore.

## Raindrop.io

For bookmarks with tags and collections, [Raindrop](https://savepad.app/compare/raindrop) is the sensible choice. Free with unlimited bookmarks, highlights on Pro, extensions everywhere. The [Raindrop alternatives](https://savepad.app/blog/raindrop-alternatives) post covers its newer AI features.

## Pinboard

Plain, fast, no-nonsense bookmarks with tags, a small yearly fee, and an optional archive that keeps a copy of every page. If Diigo’s age was a feature for you, Pinboard will feel familiar.

## Savepad

Savepad keeps a full-page snapshot and a clean reading copy of every link, on every plan, so if a page dies you still have it. Search runs over the full text, so you can find a page by a sentence in it. There’s no highlighting yet; you can add a note to any save. If highlights were your main thing, Readwise Reader is the better fit. If keeping pages was, this is.

## Moving your Diigo library

Export HTML or CSV from Diigo’s tools page. In Savepad, go to **Settings → Import and export**, drop the file in, and your tags come across as tags. Every page gets fetched again in the background, and Savepad tells you which ones have died since you saved them (after 15 years, expect a few). The [import docs](https://savepad.app/docs/import-from-other-apps) have every format, and [how to organize bookmarks](https://savepad.app/blog/how-to-organize-bookmarks) is worth a skim before you rebuild.
