# How to get newsletters out of your inbox

Newsletters bury the emails that matter. How to move them out with Gmail filters, an RSS trick, or a reader app, and how to keep the good ones as a swipe file.

*Newsletters kept as emails in a Savepad folder*

**TLDR**

- **Free and fast:** a Gmail filter that skips the inbox and labels anything with “unsubscribe” in it.
- **Read them like a feed:** give newsletters an RSS address (Kill the Newsletter) or a reader app’s address (Feedbin, Readwise Reader).
- **Keep the good ones:** forward them to a swipe file. If you write newsletters or emails yourself, this is your best research.

## Option 1: a Gmail filter

This takes two minutes and clears 80% of the noise.

1. In Gmail’s search bar, type `unsubscribe` and press enter.
2. Click the **filter** icon at the right of the search bar (it looks like sliders).
3. Click **Create filter**.
4. Tick **Skip the Inbox (Archive it)** and **Apply the label**, and make a label called **Newsletters**.
5. Tick **Also apply filter to matching conversations** and create it.

Newsletters still arrive, they just wait under the label. Receipts and some important mail mention unsubscribe too, so check the label for a week. Outlook does the same with **Rules**.

## Option 2: newsletters as RSS

If you already read blogs in an RSS reader, put newsletters there too.

- **[Kill the Newsletter](https://kill-the-newsletter.com)** makes a throwaway email address and an RSS feed for it. Subscribe with the address, read in your feed reader. Free.
- **[Feedbin](https://feedbin.com)** gives you a private email address for newsletters right inside your feeds. Paid.

## Option 3: a reader app

**[Readwise Reader](https://readwise.io/read)** and **[Matter](https://getmatter.com)** both give you an address for newsletters, so they land next to the articles you saved. Good if you actually read them. The [best read-it-later apps](https://savepad.app/blog/best-read-it-later-apps) post compares them.

## Option 4: keep the good ones

If you’re a marketer, the newsletters in your inbox aren’t just reading. They’re examples. The subject line that made you open, the layout, the CTA. That’s an [email swipe file](https://savepad.app/blog/email-swipe-file), and your inbox is a terrible place to keep one.

Savepad gives every account its own email address. Forward a newsletter and it’s kept as the email: the brand as the sender, the subject, the preheader, and the date it went out, searchable by every word. Add `+newsletters` before the @ and it goes straight into that folder. The [save from your phone](https://savepad.app/docs/save-from-your-phone) docs show the address trick.

## FAQ

### How do I stop newsletters cluttering my Gmail inbox?

Make a filter: search for the word unsubscribe, click the filter icon, tick Skip the Inbox and Apply the label, and pick a label like Newsletters. They'll still arrive, just not in your inbox.

### Can I read newsletters as RSS?

Yes. Kill the Newsletter gives you a throwaway email address that turns into an RSS feed. Readers like Feedbin and Readwise Reader give you a newsletter address too.

### How do I keep a newsletter I liked?

Forward it to a swipe file. Savepad gives you your own address: forward a newsletter there and it's kept as the email, with the brand as the sender and the date it went out.
