# How to save links and resources with ChatGPT

ChatGPT finds great links and then forgets them. Connect it to your swipe file over MCP and it saves, sorts, and finds them for you. Setup, prompts, and limits.

*A Savepad list of saved links sorted into folders, the way ChatGPT can file them*

**TLDR**

- ChatGPT is great at finding and sorting links, and terrible at keeping them. Memory isn’t a bookmark list, and chats get buried.
- Connect it to Savepad over MCP (Developer mode, Plus or higher) and it can save links and notes into your folders, then find them again later.
- Best uses: dump a messy list and have it filed, have it research examples and save the good ones, and search your swipe file in plain English.
- Savepad has no AI inside it. ChatGPT does the sorting in your chat, Savepad keeps the result.

## The problem with keeping links in ChatGPT

You ask ChatGPT for “five B2B homepages with a good product tour” and get a decent answer. Two weeks later you need them again. They’re somewhere in a chat called “Homepage ideas” (or was it “Untitled”?), and the links might not even be in that one.

ChatGPT has a few ways to keep things, and none of them is a place for resources:

- **Chat history** is one long list of conversations. You can search it, but you’re searching chats, not links.
- **Memory** keeps facts about you, like “works in marketing at a dev tool”. It isn’t a list you can browse or sort.
- **Projects** group chats and files together, which helps, but a link is still just a line of text in a chat.

What you want is the links themselves, each with its preview, in the right folder, findable by what’s on the page.

## Connect ChatGPT to Savepad

ChatGPT talks to other tools over MCP, and it calls the setting **Developer mode**. It needs Plus, Pro, Business, or Enterprise. OpenAI renames these menus every few months, so if a label doesn’t match, look for the nearest thing. The [step-by-step guide](https://savepad.app/docs/connect-an-assistant) gets updated when they do.

1. In Savepad, go to **Settings**, then **API and assistants**, pick ChatGPT, and press **Make my link**. Tick **Full control** if you want ChatGPT to make folders too.
2. In ChatGPT, open **Settings**, then **Apps** (or **Connectors**), then **Advanced settings**, and switch on **Developer mode**.
3. Back on **Apps**, press **Create**. Name it `Savepad`, paste your link as the **MCP Server URL**, pick **No authentication** (the link is the key), tick **I trust this application**, and press **Create**.
4. In a chat, press **+**, then **More**, and pick **Savepad**.

## What to have it do

### File a messy list

Got links in a Google Doc, a notes app, or an email to yourself? Paste the lot:

> Save all of these. Put competitor homepages in Competitors, email examples in Email, and anything else in Unsorted. Add a note to each saying where I found it: “Q3 planning doc”.

Savepad fetches each page as it comes in, so you get titles, previews, and descriptions without typing any of them.

### Research, then save the keepers

ChatGPT can browse, so let it do the legwork:

> Find B2B SaaS homepages that show the product in the first screen, and save the six best to Homepages with a one-line note on why.

Then open the folder in Savepad and delete the two you don’t like. It’s fast, but it’s still your swipe file.

### Keep an answer

When ChatGPT writes something worth keeping, like a teardown of a pricing page or a list of subject line formulas, save it as a note next to the examples it’s about:

> Save that teardown as a note in Pricing pages.

### Ask your swipe file questions

> What have I saved about free trials? Anything from this year?

ChatGPT searches your Savepad (titles, notes, and the text of the pages you saved) and answers with links you can open.

## A few rules that help

- **Name the folders.** ChatGPT can look up your folders, but it guesses less when you tell it.
- **Keep the link to yourself.** It has your key inside it. Don’t paste it in a shared chat or a screenshot. You can revoke it in Settings any time.
- **Check what it filed.** It’s sorting by what’s on the page, and pages lie. A “pricing” link that’s really a blog post about pricing will happen.

*A mock B2B homepage for the fictional analytics tool Lumen with the product shown in the hero*

0805 · lumen.io · Homepages

*A mock free trial reminder email from the fictional brand Coldco*

0902 · Email · from Coldco

*A mock note saved alongside a pricing page*

0999 · note · Pricing pages

Links ChatGPT found and filed: a homepage with the product up top, a free trial email, and a pricing page teardown saved as a note.

## Same idea, different assistant

On Claude, it’s called a custom connector and works on the free plan too. That’s in [how to save links with Claude](https://savepad.app/blog/save-links-with-claude). If you’re pulling things together from everywhere (Slack, Figma, Drive, your bookmarks bar), [getting everything into one place](https://savepad.app/blog/keep-everything-in-one-place) walks through it source by source.

## FAQ

### Can ChatGPT save links to a bookmark manager?

Yes, through an MCP connector. In ChatGPT's Developer mode you add your Savepad link as an app, and ChatGPT can then save links and notes into your folders and search what you saved.

### Which ChatGPT plans support MCP connectors?

Developer mode needs Plus, Pro, Business, or Enterprise. It isn't on the free plan.

### Is ChatGPT's memory a good place to keep links?

No. Memory is for facts about you, like your job or your preferences. It isn't searchable as a list, and it doesn't keep a page's preview or a copy of it.

### Does Savepad send my saves to OpenAI?

Only what ChatGPT asks for in your chat, when you ask it to search or open something. Savepad itself never calls a model.
