# SavepadBot

If you found `SavepadBot/1.0 (+https://savepad.app/bot)` in your logs, hi. That’s us. Savepad is a swipe file: people save pages they want to remember, like your pricing page or that one onboarding flow, and Savepad keeps a copy for them. Here’s every reason our bot knocks, and how to tell it to go away.

## When someone saves your page

Somebody pasted your URL into Savepad, emailed it in, or saved it from an assistant. Our server fetches the page once to get its title, description, preview image, colours, and text, so they can search for it later. We also screenshot the full page at desktop and phone widths in a headless browser (Cloudflare’s Browser Rendering).

That’s a person asking for your page, the same way their browser would, so this visit doesn’t check robots.txt. If your site refuses us, we may ask the Internet Archive for a copy it already has instead.

## Link checks, once a week

People on our biggest plan get told when a link they saved dies or moves. So once a week we ask your server for each saved page: a `HEAD` request, or a `GET` if you don’t answer `HEAD`, and we close the connection without reading the page. One request at a time per site, a second apart, and never more than 25 of your pages a day.

This one is automated, so it reads your robots.txt first and does what it says.

## Page history, once a month

People can also ask Savepad to watch a page, like a competitor’s pricing page, and keep a new copy whenever it changes. We look once a month. It’s automated too, so it checks robots.txt first, the same as link checks. If someone hits “snap it now” by hand, that’s them asking, like a save.

## How to block it

Add this to your robots.txt:

```
`User-agent: SavepadBot Disallow: /`
```

That stops link checks and page history on your whole site. You can also block just part of it, with `Disallow: /private/`, and we’ll understand `Allow`, `*`, and `$` the way Google does. Changes show up the next time we come round, since we read robots.txt fresh on every run.

Saves people make by hand still go through, because those are them, not us. If you want those stopped too, or you think the bot’s misbehaving, email [r@savepad.app](mailto:r@savepad.app) with your domain and we’ll sort it out. That goes straight to me, and I read everything.

## What it never does

- Log in, fill in forms, or click things.
- Follow links around your site. It only ever asks for the exact pages people saved.
- Download videos from YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and the like. Links, titles, and thumbnails only.
- Train an AI on anything. There’s no AI in Savepad, [on purpose](https://savepad.app/philosophy).

The fetching side of this, and what it means for the people who save, is in [our privacy policy](https://savepad.app/privacy). And if you’re curious what all those saves turn into, [here’s what Savepad does with a saved page](https://savepad.app/features/enrichment).
