TikTok ad examples
TikTok ad formats that work, from UGC testimonials to problem-solution demos, the hook patterns behind them, and where to find top-performing ads for free.
TLDR
- On TikTok, the ad has about two seconds before the thumb moves. The hook is the ad.
- Formats that keep working: UGC testimonials, problem then solution, “things I wish I knew”, unboxings, and creator collabs.

Hooks that work
The first line, or the first visual, does all the work. Patterns that turn up in top ads again and again:
- The callout: “If you have curly hair, stop scrolling.”
- The confession: “I wasted €400 before I found this.”
- The result first: show the after, then explain.
- The question: “Why does nobody talk about this?”
- The pattern break: something visually odd in frame one.
Formats
UGC testimonial. A person, a phone, a bedroom, talking about the product like they’d tell a friend. It’s the default for a reason: it looks like TikTok.
Problem, then solution. Show the annoying thing (a messy cupboard, a slow checkout) for two seconds, then the product fixing it.
“Things I wish I knew.” A list format that promises value and smuggles the product in at number three.
Unboxing. Packaging, first reaction, the product in use. Great for DTC.
Creator collab. A creator’s own style, with your product. Run as a Spark Ad from their account and it looks completely native.
What the top ads have in common
- Captions, always. Most people watch muted.
- Product on screen by second five. Often earlier.
- Shot on a phone. Polished studio ads usually lose here.
- One message. Not three features in 15 seconds.
Keep the hooks
Short videos vanish fast: creators delete them, brands pull them, and the Creative Center’s top list changes weekly. When one stops your thumb, save the link or a screen recording with a note on the exact second that hooked you. In Savepad, tag it #hook and search later by your note or the caption. How to save TikToks and Reels has the phone setup, and the ad swipe file post covers the rest.
FAQ
What makes a good TikTok ad?
A hook in the first one or two seconds, the product on screen early, captions for people watching muted, and a native look that fits the feed instead of a polished TV spot.
Where can I find top-performing TikTok ads?
The TikTok Creative Center's Top Ads section is free and lets you filter by country, industry, and objective.
What is a UGC ad?
An ad made to look like user-generated content: a real person filming on their phone, talking about a product. Brands hire creators to make them because they feel native on TikTok.
