Eagle alternatives
Eagle is a fast desktop app for huge local image libraries. The alternatives if you want your references on the web, on your phone, or without the new AI features.
TLDR
- Eagle is great if you keep tens of thousands of design files on your own computer and like paying once. That’s a very good deal and most alternatives can’t match it.
- People leave because it’s desktop only, it’s built for files more than links, or they don’t love where the AI features are heading.
- For a web library of references, look at Savepad. For browsing other designers’ finds, look at Savee or Cosmos. For local files with no subscription, there’s honestly nothing better than Eagle.
What Eagle is good at
Eagle is a desktop app for Mac and Windows that keeps your images, videos, fonts, and design files in a library on your own disk. It’s fast with huge libraries, it reads almost every file format, and it costs $29.95 once. No subscription. Designers with 40,000 screenshots swear by it.
Why people look elsewhere
- It’s stuck on one desk. Your library lives on your laptop. On your phone, at a client’s office, on the train, it isn’t there.
- Links are an afterthought. Eagle can grab an image off a page, but it’s built around files. A full landing page with its text, an email, or an onboarding flow don’t really fit.
- The AI bit. Recent Eagle releases added AI search and AI actions through plugins. If you picked Eagle because it was a simple local tool, that’s a change.
Savepad
Savepad lives on the web, so your library is wherever you are, and you can email things in from your phone. Paste a link and you get a full-page screenshot at desktop and phone widths, a reading copy, the page’s colours, and its fonts. Drop in an image and the words in it become searchable. Colour search works off the image itself.
It’s built for references more than raw files. If you need to manage 40,000 PSDs, stay on Eagle. If you need to find “that pricing page with the green toggle” in two seconds, that’s Savepad’s whole thing. The design swipe file post shows how designers set it up.
Savee
Savee is a beautiful grid of images with a big design community, browser extensions, phone apps, and a Figma plugin. Great if you love browsing what other designers save. It’s mostly images, so pages and emails don’t fit.
Cosmos
Cosmos is built for discovering images, with search by colour and by similar look. You can also hide AI-generated images, which is a nice touch. Same deal as Savee: lovely for images, less so for everything else.
Free and huge, but Pinterest has filled up with AI images and ads, and it’s not built to be a private library. Secret boards help a bit.

Moving out of Eagle
Your Eagle library is a folder of files on disk, which is the nice part: nothing is locked in. Drag folders of images straight into Savepad and they come in as saves, with the text in them read for search. For anything you saved from a URL, the original link is in Eagle’s info panel, and pasting those into a CSV lets you import them as full pages.
The full head-to-head is on the Eagle alternative page, and design inspiration websites has the sites worth filling it from.
